Displaced Homemaker Scholarships for Moms

Displaced homemaker scholarships for mothers
Displaced Homemaker Scholarships

While there are many grant opportunities for a displaced homemaker, there are very few scholarships for moms who have worked themselves out of a job – homemaking. The kids are grown, and mom is ready to finally see to her own needs, starting with her education. After the expense of raising kids, there isn’t much left to pay for that education, which is why you need scholarships for moms and grants for moms – especially those for displaced homemakers.

Aside from grant opportunities, the only real scholarship available for displaced homemakers is the one offered by the Association of American Indian Affairs, at http://www.indian-affairs.org/scholarships/displaced_homemakers.htm. This displaced homemaker scholarship is awarded in the amount of $1500, and is available to undergraduate students, and is paid twice a year, in $750 increments.

The mission of the AAIA is to call attention to the welfare of American Indians and Alaska Natives. They do this by supporting efforts of their cultures and languages, protect their sovereignty, constitutional, legal and human rights, and natural resources; and focusing on cultivating their health, education, and economic & community development. They are the oldest Indian organization in the US – 88 years. They have eight different scholarship programs at this time and amounts awarded vary from year to year based on the gifts of doners. Most of the AAIA scholarships require you to be from federally recognized tribes and who are at least 1/4 Indian blood unless otherwise indicated.

The fund available through this college scholarship for moms may be used towards tuition, transportation, child care, and living expenses. Each semester, you must submit your grades from the previous semester to receive the next disbursement, and you must maintain your grades. Additionally, you must reapply each year to continue to be eligible for the award.

While the award is usually given to women, who are the traditional homemaker’s in the family, it is also available for men who have put their educations on hold, in an effort to raise a family. Naturally, those who apply for and win this award will be adult students.

The displaced homemaker scholarships aren’t just available to those whose children have grown up. It is also available to those who have become displaced homemaker’s through other situations, such as a divorce or a death. When you apply, you must fill out the application, provide your monthly budget, and also write an essay concerning your family responsibilities.

To apply applicants must be Native American or Alaska Native from the continental US or Alaska.

For questions on the AAIA displaced homemaker scholarships contact Lisa Wyzlic at lw.aaia@verizon.net or 240-314-7155.

The JRF scholarship Fund was set up with the money from Jeanette Rankin’s property upon her death which she wanted used to help unemployed mature women workers who needed help in bettering themselves.

In order to win these potential mothers scholarships by JRF, you must be able to express how a higher education will benefit you, your family, and your community. While the mom scholarship opportunity here is good, it is important to note that not many JRF scholarships are awarded each year, as there have only been just a little over 600 scholarships awarded since 1978 and a total of 1.3 million awarded since its conception. November 1st is when they open applications to be accepted. The deadline is March 1st of each year for submitting your applications.

ROSE Moms Scholarships

ROSE moms scholarships
ROSE Scholarships

If you have been a victim of spousal abuse or partner abuse, and you are a mother, you may be eligible for the domestic abuse moms scholarships from ROSE, or Regaining One’s Self Esteem. Based in Boston, Massachusetts, this organization strives to empower women, enabling them to stay out of domestic abuse situations, and to provide for their children well – through education. The ROSE Fund all began in 1992 and in 1998 the scholarship program was created.

Aside from awarding funds for medical procedures, dental procedures, and even reconstructive surgeries that are needed as a result of abuse, the organization also provides mom scholarships for college. The moms scholarships that are offered are awarded for the purpose of helping women with career training ad professional development. These mothers scholarships are awarded in amounts of $2000 per semester, and the organization works with colleges, universities, and trade schools in the Northeastern United States.

There are no set parameters for eligibility, or for the award selection, and there is no specific application period or deadline. The winners of these mother scholarships are based solely on need, and solely at the discretion of the ROSE organization and their partners. There does not appear to be a limit on the number of awards made each year; however awards can only be made when funds are available.

It is important to note that while $2000 will be paid for each semester that you are in school, you must still reapply each semester for the award. If you fail to reapply, you will not receive the $2000 award for subsequent semesters. You can apply for the scholarship program at ROSE scholarships. Sometimes because of the lack of scholarship funding they may not offer the scholarship program. You can always email them via their contact page to inquire when it will be available.

Additionally, you should be aware that there are many other college scholarships for moms and college scholarships for single moms that are available, and you should apply for all of them as well, including all of the state and Federal grants that you can get. While $2000 may seem like a lot of money, when it comes to the cost of a college education, it doesn’t go very far.

Note: 4/8/2010 – It seems like the ROSE scholarship program was suspended. If you go to their website they have the following scholarship Post:

The ROSE Scholarship Program was created in 1998 to provide survivors with the ability to increase self-esteem and self-sufficiency through the pursuit of secondary education and the achievement of college degrees. PLEASE NOTE: AS OF JAN 1, 2010, ALTHOUGH WE HAVE BEEN ABLE TO SUSTAIN OUR SUPPORT OF ALL CURRENT ROSE SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS, WE ARE FULLY COMMITTED THROUGH 2011 AND WILL NOT BE ABLE TO AWARD ANY NEW SCHOLARSHIPS FOR THE FORSEEABLE FUTURE

Normally when you see a suspension of a scholarship program it’s a direct result of a lack of funds. As more funding becomes available then scholarship programs can be restarted. The other programs offered by ROSE may be of great benefit to the many that are victims of domestic violence and should be looked at as a substitute for a mothers scholarship. They are unique in nature and applying guidelines are straight forward from their website.

Accounting Scholarships for Single Moms

Accounting Scholarships for Single Mothers
Accounting Scholarships

If you are a single mom, and you want to obtain a degree in accounting, you will need to check into the college scholarships for single moms offered by the Educational Foundation for Women in Accounting, or the EFWA. These moms scholarships are not offered every year, but when they are, they are worth applying for. There are two types of single moms scholarships offered by the organization: The Women in Transition Scholarship and the Women in Need Scholarship.

The Educational Foundation for Women in Accounting, or the EFWA’s sole purpose is to “support the advancement of women in the accounting profession through the funding of education, research, career literature, publications and other projects. The Educational Foundation encourages and enables women to enter the accounting profession and empowers them to achieve equal opportunities and equal rewards”.

The Women in Transition Scholarship is only available to women who will be freshmen, or who currently are freshmen in college. When this mom scholarship is awarded, it pays up to $16,000, which is intended to cover four years of school costs. Only one award is made. Again, this college scholarship for single moms is not awarded each year, depending on available funds.

The Women in Need Scholarship is only available to women who are currently in college, or will be returning to college, at the junior level. This scholarship for single mothers pays up to $2000 per year, for a period of two years. More than one award may be made, depending on available funds. It appears that this single mothers scholarship is available each year.

No matter which college mom scholarship you are applying for, you must be planning to pursue a degree and career in accounting. You must also be the only source of financial support for your family or for yourself, and awards are typically made to women who show financial need as well, as opposed to those who do not show a real financial need. Women who are single parents due to divorce or death are considered first, but women who have never been married, and have dependent children are also considered. You can only apply to one or the other but not both of the above college mother scholarships. You must also be a US citizen to apply and must attend a school in the US. Online classes may qualify too.

The application deadline for the EFWA single moms scholarships is May first of each year, and selections are typically made by the end of June but you can check in January of each year to see which scholarships will be available for that year. Employers Provide Scholarships for Working Moms

Employers working moms scholarships
Working Mom Scholarships

If you work, and you are a mom or a single mom, your employer may have scholarships for working moms that you do not know about. In some cases, the employer briefly mentions this during your training period, and you will never hear about it again – unless you ask.

You can easily find out if your employer offers working moms scholarships by contacting the Human Resources division within your company. If you work for a small business, ask the owner of the business directly if they have a moms scholarships program to help pay for your education. Many employers – large or small – will help to finance your education, particularly if you agree to work for them for a specified amount of time, and if you are seeking a degree in a field that correlates to their business.

Consider trade organizations that are associated with the type of company that you work for as well. Trade organizations almost always have some type of working moms scholarship opportunity, and even if the award amounts are small, many small awards can stack up to funds that are large enough to pay for your entire education.

If you are a member of a union, or your parents were members of a union, you may be eligible for working mom or moms scholarships that they offer, despite the fact that you are an adult. Larger unions will typically have scholarships that are available to the children of their members, no matter how old those children are. Labor unions are a great source for scholarships for moms.

Consider all memberships that you hold, as well as memberships that you could hold in the various organizations in your area, including national organizations. Check with charitable foundations as well, and large organizations, such as Coca-Cola, Ford, GM Motors, and Johnson and Johnson, which always have scholarships for working moms available.

Another really outstanding source of working moms scholarships is your local Chamber of Commerce to find out about scholarships that are offered locally by various businesses in your area that you can apply too. The Chamber of Commerce is very willing to help on all levels and if they can’t help you directly they should be able to offer suggestions on where you may find any mother scholarship programs in the area.

Women clubs would also be another authority on finding a working mom scholarship or grant. Find out what the local women clubs are in your area from the Chamber of Commerce or even call the city in which you reside. The Business and Professional Women Club for example has scholarships for working moms if you reside in certain areas of Pennsylvania. The Richardson Women Club Scholarship is for students attending Richland College in Dallas. If you check with the college you are or will be attending then they will be able to provide more women club suggestions which may be more active for scholarships for working moms.

Talbot’s Scholarships

When looking for scholarships for moms you must look at all womens scholarships and apply to them as well. For instance, the Talbot’s Department Store is awarding scholarships to women – including scholarships for moms and scholarships for single moms. Each year, the corporation awards a significant number of womens scholarships which vary slightly from year to year. In 2009 Talbot’s awarded six $10,000 scholarships, and (60) $1000 scholarships. In year 2010 up to ten (10) scholarships of $15,000 and one (1) $30,000 scholarship will be awarded. These awards are made through Talbot’s Charitable Foundation, which is a part of the Talbot’s Corporation. Very generous indeed.

Talbots was established in 1947 and is a leading specialty retailer and direct marketer of women’s apparel, shoes and accessories. They have 587 stores in 47 states and employs 12,000 people throughout the world. They do over 1.5 billion in sales and are noted for quality merchandise.

If you are or will be attending a four year school, a community college, or a vocational or trade school, you are eligible for the $1000 scholarships. However only those attending or planning to attend a four year school, to get a bachelor’s degree will be eligible for the $10,000 scholarships.
